NYC pizza still reigns supreme — no matter how you slice it.
A Manhattan kitchen has reclaimed the title of world’s best pie, usurping two southern Italian icons.
Una Pizza Napoletana, at 175 Orchard St. — which tied for the title in 2022 and was named the best pizza in the U.S. last June for the third year in a row — is back at No. Best Pizza 1 of 50 worldwide this week.
Last year, Diego Vitagliano of Naples and I Masanielli of Caserta tied for first place, with Una Pizza Napoletana in second place. This year, the two Italian clubs tied again, this time for second place, behind the Lower East Side champion.
“In a place always used to putting everything on pizza, Anthony’s proposes only the purest tradition in toppings, with exceptional quality ingredients,” the pricing page reads, noting owner Anthony Mangieri is known for his marinara-style, Margherita and Cosacca, plus a swirl pie. .
“It’s inspiring to be recognized for this, 30 years into my career, especially in Naples where pizza originated,” said the Jersey Shore native and Yankee fan — who moved his restaurant from New Jersey to San Francisco to, in in 2022, LES. CNN Travel.
He claims that the beginning of a good pizza comes from the dough. At Una Pizza Napoletana, there is a marked effort to keep the main ingredient hydrated – and only in good hands.
“No one makes the dough in the restaurant, 25 years later, except me,” Mangieri has said before.
“Every single pizza that people eat, I still make the dough myself in the morning.”
And while Mangieri is grateful for the accolades, he still has a higher purpose behind the kitchen counter.
“The recognition is appreciated, but in the end it is not the reason why I started it and not why I continue to make every dough ball we serve at Una after all these years,” he said.
“It encourages us to go to the restaurant every day and give more love and focus, and not take anything for granted.”
Other lounges in the Top 10 include Tokyo’s Pizza Bar at 38th in third place; It is limited to Milan in the fourth; and London’s Naples on the Road ranked fifth.
Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco took sixth place and I Tigli in San Bonifacio, Italy, came in seventh. Rounding out the top 10 were Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona, Spain; 50 Pass to Naples; and Seu Pizza Illuminati in Rome.
In the country, Ribalta near Union Square was No. 19, Don Antonio in Hell’s Kitchen was ranked 30th, and L’Industrie of Brooklyn – rated the best part in the US last June by the organization – took 80th place.
